The large cupola in Florence – structural design and intuition ih the 15th century
Abstract
The large dome (cupola) of St. Maria del Fiore at Florence is one of the most significant buildings of the cultural heritage of the world. The nearly 100 m high dome with a diameter of about 42 m was built without any scaffolding following the ideas and under the supervision of Filippo Brunelleschi at the beginning of the 15th century. The historical background is sketched and the problems of the design and static behaviour solved intuitively by Brunelleschi are explained. The paper ends with a description of the problems caused by major cracks and explains the considerations of a possible rehabilitation.
